National Apprenticeship Week: Matthew’s Journey at Weiss Technik UK

Matthew shares what he’s been up to in his first six months as a Technical Support Apprentice

In the spirit of National Apprenticeship Week, we thought we’d share the journey of our Technical Support Apprentice, Matthew Ellaway, at Weiss Technik UK so far. Hoping to inspire the next cohort of apprentices, Matthew shares why he chose to do an apprenticeship in engineering at Weiss Technik UK, the valuable skills he’s acquired, and his aspirations for the future.

Embarking on an apprenticeship was an exciting opportunity to dive into the world of engineering, and choosing Weiss Technik UK to help me kickstart my career was a no-brainer. As a local and growing company, it offers lots of potential for career progression. My job role covers all of the aspects of engineering that I’m interested in, allowing me to learn new skills and gain more knowledge about the industry than I ever would’ve if I went to university.

My time at Weiss Technik has been really positive so far. Everyone is really welcoming and friendly, which has made it easy to settle in. The support from everyone around me has been instrumental in my early days here, and I’ve had the chance to explore new opportunities that have deepened my understanding of the industry. It’s been a great start, and I look forward to learning and developing more as my apprenticeship continues.

In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve already picked up a range of skills that I apply daily in my role. From being able to communicate with customers to remotely assisting them with their climatic test chamber issues, every day brings a new challenge. I’ve also been able to carry out calibrations and maintenance on the chambers, which is a really useful and vital part of the work we carry out. These hands-on experiences have been invaluable in shaping my soft skills—something you don’t realise the value of until you need to use them!

Looking ahead to the next five years, my primary goal is to successfully complete my apprenticeship and progress into a role with more responsibilities. With the experience and knowledge I’ll have gained by the end, I hope to be able to visit more customers and witness first-hand how our chambers are used across various industries.

My time at Weiss Technik UK has been a rewarding introduction to the field of engineering. As I continue to learn, adapt, and grow, I’m looking forward to the opportunities my apprenticeship will give me. Weiss Technik UK has proven to be not just a workplace, but a platform for young apprentices like me to thrive and become the engineers of the future.
